Lord Ram, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was born in India in Ayodhya to King Dashrath and mother Kaushalya.
Lord Ram was married to Sita and she was kidnapped by the evil Ravan, who wanted to marry the beautiful Sita. Ravan in those days was considered to be the most powerful king and he resided at Lanka which was an island country, to the south of India. Now Lord Ram, with the help of Lord Hanumanji and monkey army, headed by Sugriv , defeated Ravan and brought Sita back. This rejoiced the country so much that people lighted earthen lamps and burnt crackers with joy. Till date the tradition continues and
people celebrate Diwali as the victory of good over evil. People exchange gifts, perform Luxmi Pooja ie worshiping the mother wealth, and light candles in their homes and burn crackers.
